What's Old Is New Again: The Arsenio Hall Show Premiers Sept 9th

The @ArsenioHall Show was a groundbreaking, Emmy Award winning late-night talk show and is now heading back to a television near you; premiering on September 9th on CBS.

The show will be hosted by actor and comedian Arsenio Hall who was a major player in promoting urban/ African American talent and boosted the careers of many, where other television outlets were selective 'picky' in doing so; especially the underground and misunderstood culture of Hip Hop music at the time, which was the main voice of the young black community. Arsenio extended invitation to these young voices and talents to use his platform, and millions tuned in nightly. The show was the go-to for entertainers to reach the MTV generation from 1989 to 1994.

During the show's run there were appearances by Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan, Madonna, Mariah Carey which was her television debut, a then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton playing "Heartbreak Hotel" on his saxophone, Muppets creator Jim Henson was on the show 12 day before his death, many of the World Wrestling Federation - WWF stars, including Hulk Hogan, Rick Rude, and 'The Macho Man' Randy Savage (my favorite) and others made appearances, and Hall's personal friends like Eddie Murphy, Paula Abdul, and Andrew "Dice Clay" were semi-regular guests.

The original Arsenio Hall Show came to be, after the dismissal of the Joan Rives show on the Fox Network, which the network still had to fill 13 weeks and Arsenio was brought in to host what was called 'The Late Show'. During that time the show grew in popularity, but Hall was unable to stay on due to a little film he was working on 'Coming To America' with Eddie Murphy. The Fox network was not fast enough to sign Hall, as he already had a working relationship with Paramount Television and stayed with CBS. There are several situations and reasons why The Aresenio Hall Show was cancelled in 1994, from a 60 minute interview with controversial leader Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam, to going up against 'Late Show with David Letterman' and a new MTV late night program hosted by Jon Stewart.

With the revival of Arsenio's show it will be interesting to see how today's generation takes to it, because these are different times, from the entertainers, topics, and even sense of humor. Hall has develop new followers with his appearance on Celebrity Apprentice in 2012, but is that enough?

The Arsenio Hall Show was viewed by many nightly back in the day, and was all the talk the following day in the school hallways; but today, I don't stay up to watch any of the late night shows, and only catch some highlights online, however, I am willing to see what Arsenio Hall has to offer in 2013. Hall changed the game of late night talk shows almost 25 years ago, I don't think his goal is to change the game again but maybe offer something different. The nightly one hour syndicated talk show will air across the U.S. primarily in 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. time slots. Check your local listings for details.
